Is there any difference between h:oren (sorry, I don't have a German keyboard) and anh:oren? Here are some examples that I made myself:

1. Ich mag es, Michael Jackson zu h:oren (I like listening to Michael Jackson)
2. Ich mag es, Michael Jackson anzuh:oren (I like listening to listen to Michael Jackson)
3. Meine Hobbys sind, ins Kino gehen und Musik h:oren (My hobbies are going to the movies and listening to music)
4. Meine Hobbys sind, ins Kino gehen und Musik anzuh:oren (same)
5. Es lohnt sich, Deutsch zu lernen, damit man sch:one deutsche Lieder h:oren kann (It's worth it to learn German so that one can listen to beautiful German songs)
6. Es lohnt sich, Deutsch zu lernen, damit man sch:one deutsche Lieder anh:oren kann (same)

Are they basically the same or do they have small differences?

Thank you all.

There is a difference. "Hören" means "to hear" and "anhören" means "to listen". So, when you "hear" music, you basically not intentionally listening to music, but you hear it in the background or so. I guess, music is a special case though because in english, we pretty much always use "to listen" and not "to hear". And in german, people also use "hören" when they intentionally listen to music. A bit confusing.

So Germans use them interchangeably, right? I guess it isn't really something to worry about then.

If I say, for example, "Seit meiner Kindheit hab ich eine größe Leidenschaft für Musik spielen und hören" instead of "anhören," Germans would understand without confusion.

Got it. "hören" is used to describe hearing things like noises and sounds: "Wir haben gestern ein merkwürdiges Geräusch in unserer Wohnung gehört," for instance. Meanwhile, "anhören" specifically implies the act of listening to something: "Als wir sehr jung waren, sind wir in die Konzerthalle immer zusammengegangen, um Deutschlands beliebter Karnavalslieder anzuhören."

Thank you. If you don't mind, here's another question: can someone tell me the different meanings of "bei?" Thank you very much.

Edit: it just occurred to me that, in some cases, "bei" can be translated as "in regard/regards to." Is that right? I recently read an article on welt.de, for instance, that begins with the following sentence:

"Beim Sex hat jeder so seine ganz eigenen Vorlieben." "In regard to sex, everyone has their own preferences."

Would these sentences be correct?

1. Beim Deutsch lernen ist die Grammatik schwer, im Vergleich zu anderen Sprachen.
2. Beim Film bevorzuge ich es, mir Drama anzuschauen, statt mir Horror anzuschauen.
3. Bei den Frauen klingten ziemlich sauer, weil ich den :altern Mann nicht geholfen hab.

I also know that "bei" indicates association. Working at a job, for example:

1. Mein Vater empfelht mir jeden Tag, mich bei der Firma zu bewerben.
2. Momentan arbeite ich bei ABC, aber ich bin mir nicht sicher, wie lange ich dort arbeite werden.
3. Sie unterricht zurzeit Deutsch bei einer :Universit:at in den USA. Diese T:atigkeit ge:fallt sie ja wohl.

It also specifies a temporary condition, doesn't it? Like, there's a big difference between "mit" and "bei" in this context.

1. Ich wohne bei meiner Mutter (I live with my mother right now, but hopefully that will change soon)
2. Ich wohne mit meiner Mutter (I live with my mother and there are no plans to change that)

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks again.
